Position Summary
The Brentwood Community Chorus is seeking a passionate and skilled Choral Director to lead and inspire our ensemble. The Director will be responsible for all musical aspects of the chorus, including selecting repertoire, conducting weekly rehearsals, and directing performances. The ideal candidate will create a welcoming, educational, and musically enriching environment that encourages participation and vocal growth. This is a paid, part-time position based in Brentwood, CA, with rehearsals held weekly and two major concerts presented annually.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule and conduct all regular and special rehearsals of the BCC. The Director shall be musically prepared to conduct rehearsals in a manner that promotes both the learning and performance of the selected music by the members of the BCC. In the event the Director is unable to attend a scheduled rehearsal due to illness, emergencies beyond his/her control, or other reasonable circumstances, the Director shall inform the BCC President at the earliest possible time prior to the scheduled rehearsal.
- Act as the Director and MC during all performances of the BCC.
- Be responsible for the recruitment and section placement of new members for the BCC.
- Be responsible for the selection of songs to be performed at BCC events.
- Be responsible for determining the composition of instruments necessary for concert performances. In so doing the Director will identify these musicians and their fees. This information will be transmitted to the BCC Board for its approval and contracting.
- The Director shall work with the BCC Board in identifying potential venues for all performances. Once venues have been selected, the BCC Board shall be responsible for entering into any contracts.
- And such other responsibilities as may be identified from time to time by the BCC Board to enhance the image and performances of the BCC.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate understanding and ability to teach members with multiple learning styles and abilities.
- Demonstrate ability to work with diverse populations.
- Demonstrate basic piano skills.
- Demonstrate ability to sight sing.
- Demonstrate ability to sing and to model good singing for members.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of choral techniques diverse musical styles and choral repertoire, performance practices, score study skills and languages.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, organization skills with precise attention to detail including the use of standard office software.
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team is essential. Must have strong interpersonal and communicative skills with the ability to build and maintain positive rapport with chorus member, supporters, and colleagues.
- BA in Music or BM or equivalent a plus
