Walnut Creek – Music Director Lawrence Kohl of Pacific Chamber Orchestra (PCO) announces a sparkling autumn concert at Del Valle Theatre, 1963 Tice Blvd., Walnut Creek at 4:00 pm on Saturday October 18 and at the Bankhead Theatre, 2400 First St., Livermore at 3:00 pm on Sunday October 19.
This radiant program begins with three beloved composers you know — Mozart, Ravel and Tchaikovsky — in works that dance, sing and shine with an expressive life of their own. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s glorious “Seventh Symphony” — a work of pulsing rhythm and soaring spirit.
Violin Soloist Livia Sohn‘s Triple Showcase — PCO features internationally celebrated virtuoso violinist Livia Sohn in a thrilling triple showcase of Mozart’s graceful “Rondo in C,” Tchaikovsky’s soulful “Serenade Melancolique,” and Ravel’s fiery “Tigane.” This is a rare opportunity to hear her perform three contrasting masterworks in a single concert.
Described as “stunning and compelling” and praised for “passion, intelligence, and refinement” (“Washington Post”), Livia has performed with major orchestras across five continents. A Juilliard graduate and Stanford educator, she brings dazzling virtuosity and deep artistry to every performance.
- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Rondo in C Major, K. 373 sparkles with the charm and wit which he is known for; and
- Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade Melancolique” offers heart-stirring lyricism with a Slavic soul; and
- Maurice Ravel’s “Tzigane” and “Le Tombeau de Couperin” show two sides of Ravel’s genius: the wild, exotic virtuoso and the refined, elegant Impressionist.
The concert concludes with Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, said to be one of his most rhythmically driven and joyful masterpieces, described as, “Pure ecstasy … a more than Bacchic festival of joy,” says J.W.N. Sullivan, Beethoven biographer. “The notes seem to fly off the page as we are borne along on a floodtide of inspired invention,” said musicologist Antony Hopkins, CBE.
