The Tallis Scholars founder Peter Phillips first gathered a group of fellow undergraduates to sing Renaissance songs at Oxford University more than 50 years ago. Ever since, the ensemble, a pioneer of this century’s early-music revival, has been known for its uncanny vocal blend, pristine clarity, and purity of tone in a range of Renaissance polyphony. The Tallis singers return to Berkeley’s First Church with a program centered on one of Josquin des Prez’s masterpieces, his Missa Fortuna desperata, as well as works by Jean Mouton, Walter Lambe, and Nicolas Gombert.
