Presented by Sierra Madre Playhouse

TeenTix LA, an organization that connects local youths to LA’s vibrant cultural scene through its unique free TeenTix Pass program, announces the first of two special events designed to introduce teens to the digital pass’ notable benefit – “Street Symphony: Mariachi, Bach & Community” on Sunday, August 31, 3pm, at the historic Sierra Madre Playhouse. The special event also includes an exclusive private teens-only pre-concert mixer and post-concert artist talk-back. The concert, open to all teens ages 13-19, features the electrifying all-female mariachi ensemble Las Chorizeras, under the direction of vocalist Nancy Sanchez. In addition, Street Symphony, led by violinist and MacArthur Fellow Vijay Gupta, performs J.S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 82 “Ich habe genug,” with a community narrator offering a contemporary reflection woven between the music’s timeless arias and recitatives. Tickets ($5) are available at www.sierramadreplayhouse.org (use code TTLANIGHT).

The TeenTix Pass, available to teens 13-19 years old, provides access to more than 35 leading theaters, museums, and film centers in the Greater Los Angeles area for just $5 per ticket. Participating institutions include Armory Center for the Arts, Center Theatre Group, East West Players, Geffen Playhouse, Heidi Duckler Dance, Latino Theatre Company, Pacific Opera Project, Pasadena Playhouse, Sierra Madre Playhouse, Skirball Cultural Center, The Autry Museum of the American West, The Soraya, Wende Museum, and many more.

“The event at Sierra Madre Playhouse offers Southland youths a great way to ‘test drive’ TeenTix LA,” says Program Director Allison Whorton. “We welcome everyone! There are no requirements to participate other than age.”

She adds, “The mission of TeenTix LA is to spark teens’ curiosity about the arts and provide access to the region’s extraordinary cultural offerings by helping to eliminate cost as a barrier to entry. Equally important, TeenTix LA provides an opportunity for teens to engage with art their own terms and connect with like-minded teens. It is very easy to sign up for a free TeenTix Pass online through our website, la.teentix.org.”

TeenTix LA currently includes more than 4,000 passholders from 500 Southland zip codes. To date, TeenTix LA has facilitated more than 2,500 $5 ticket purchases, making the arts accessible while helping cultural institutions reach a younger demographic.

TeenTix Pass companion tickets are available to passholders as well, enabling them to bring friends or family members so they can enjoy cultural events together. LA Parent describes TeenTix LA, which also has a comprehensive online calendar of events for its cultural partners, listed by date, genre, venue, or organization, as “a one-stop shop for youth to learn about arts events in the city.”

Sierra Madre Playhouse, a vibrant Southern California cultural hub with a rich history spanning a century, energizes audiences and the community with distinctive theatrical productions and captivating live performances.

Hailed as a “jewel” (Pasadena Weekly) and “a landmark theater” (ABC7 Los Angeles), it has garnered tremendous accolades for its varied repertoire and thought-provoking education and outreach programs curated with social impact in mind. The Los Angeles Times proclaims, “This is theater from the heart.” As one of San Gabriel Valley’s only performing arts center presenting a broad spectrum of performance genres, including theater, music, dance, film, comedy, and family-friendly productions featuring eminent local and national professional artists, the treasured artistic beacon draws audiences from across the Southland.

The intimate 99-seat Sierra Madre Playhouse offers an up-close and personal connection to performances that resonate deeply, earning multiple Ovation Awards, NAACP Awards, and LA Times Critics' Choice honors. In 2023, Rep. Judy Chu named the Sierra Madre Playhouse as a leading ‘Nonprofit of the Year’ in the San Gabriel Valley. The playhouse was given the honor during the 2023 Congressional Leadership of the Year Awards, which recognizes the leadership and volunteerism in the cities making up California’s 28th Congressional District. It is nestled into a historic building on the inviting Main Street of Sierra Madre, a charming village in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Retaining its distinctive movie theater façade and instantly recognizable marquee, the structure has undergone numerous transformations since opening in 1910, from furniture emporium to silent movie theatre to the artistic institution that now stands as a vibrant embodiment of the region’s rich cultural legacy. The Sierra Madre Playhouse fosters creativity that aspires to bridge divides and spark dialogue, all while celebrating the rich tapestry of the American experience and the enduring pursuit of shared understanding.
