The Medium

Presented by Stanford Department of Music

A woman's torso, dressed in black, and holding a crystal ball

Menotti’s The Medium is a gripping one-hour chamber opera which confronts faith, the manipulation of the truth and its consequences. We set the opera in early 20th century London, where Madame Flora, a charlatan psychic, makes money by pretending to connect her customers with their dead loved ones. Her accomplices are her daughter Monica and the silent, adopted Toby. When Madame Flora begins to imagine the spirits herself, her own truth unravels in madness with deadly repercussions. In an age increasingly shaped by distortion and manufactured truths, The Medium remains chillingly relevant.

Not recommended for children.
