The Handel Opera Project brings you a beloved masterpiece, Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Our stellar cast of 17 Bay Area musicians will be joined by the combined voices of the Berkeley Community Chamber Singers and San Francisco’s New Voices Trans, Intersex & Genderqueer Chorus, with orchestra conducted by Handel Opera Project founder William G. Ludtke. All are eager to share this wonderful music with you, in the magical space of Bernard Maybeck’s masterpiece, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Berkeley.

The Magic Flute is a Singspiel, a variety of popular entertainment in Mozart’s time, combining spoken dialogue with sung arias and choruses. The premiere, just two months before Mozart’s death, was an immediate success; a ‘fairy tale’ of love, courage, and enlightenment, its blend of lighthearted comedy and deep solemnity enchanted both children and the mature, and it has remained one of the most popular works in the operatic repertory.

Whether this is your first encounter with Mozart’s magical fantasy or a return to a beloved classic, The Magic Flute invites you to explore its whimsical yet profound journey, in which all may discover joy and truth.
