Three Nights of Kathakali - Two Epics - One Timeless Art

Presented by New Performance Traditions

Two dancer/actors performing Subhadra Haranam

Making their debut in our Ensemble Studio, a distinguished ensemble of Kathakali masters—curated by the acclaimed South Indian dancer Kalamandalam Manoj Kumar and Roshni Pillai, and presented at the invitation of Paul Dresher—offers an unforgettable evening of performance. Through sumptuous costumes, expressive movement, and powerful storytelling, they illuminate epic tales drawn from the Mahābhārata and the Rāmāyana.

Three Nights of Kathakali. Two Epics.

  • Day One: October 15 – Subhadra Haranam (Abduction of Subhadra)
Arjuna falls in love with Subhadra, Krishna’s sister, and—with Krishna’s help—defies expectations to marry her.

  • Day Two: October 16 – Balivijayam (The Victory of Bali)
King Ravana underestimates the mighty monkey Bali, leading to comic humiliation and unlikely friendship.

  • Day Three: October 17 – Kalyana Sougandhikam (The Quest for the Celestial Flower)
Bhima’s quest to please Draupadi brings him face-to-face with his divine brother Hanuman, who humbles his pride before blessing his journey.
