America 250: American Music Old and New

Presented by Piedmont Center for the Arts

John Zorn and Daniel Lockert

In honor of America's 250th anniversary, this will be a celebration of the rich tapestry of American classical music. Masterworks by well-known composers such as Bernstein, Gershwin, Milhaud, and Price will share the stage with gems by Michael Kaulkin and Willson Osborne. John Zorn and Daniel Lockert will present the most beloved American classical music for clarinet and piano, with hot tea and tasty treats after the music.

John Zorn has had the good fortune of studying the clarinet with some of the foremost teachers of the 20th Century. While at Stanford, he worked with David Breeden, Principal of the San Francisco Symphony, and Rosario Mazzeo, Bass Clarinetist with the Boston Symphony. Upon graduating with a B.A. in Music, John attended the Banff School for the Arts,  where he worked with Richard Waller, Principal of the Cincinnati Symphony; Robert Marcellus, Principal of the Cleveland Orchestra; and Ronald DeKant, Principal of the Vancouver Symphony. Upon completing his Master’s degree in Music Performance at the University of New Mexico under the tutelage of Floyd Williams, he then studied privately with Larry Combs, Principal of the Chicago Symphony and Stanley Hasty, Professor at the Eastman Conservatory of Music.      After completing his M.B.A. at Stanford, John has combined a career of performing on the clarinet with helping manage symphonies such as the Detroit Symphony and San Jose Symphony, consulting with art organizations, and leading Arts Reach, the Association of Arts Management, Marketing and Development Professionals. John also sings baritone in Slavyanka, an a cappella chorus performing religious and secular music in a variety of Slavic languages.

Daniel Lockert is a multi-talented pianist/collaborator, organist and harpsichordist. He was honored as the only American finalist at the first International Accompanying Competition held in Den Haag, the Netherlands. He has partnered with many notable singers including Deborah Voigt, Janice Taylor, and Christòpheren Nomura. His chamber music performances have included appearances with the Alexander String Quartet, among others. As well, he has worked with a number of distinguished conductors.      Following one of his many recital appearances, the Los Angeles Times noted that “Daniel Lockert was the expert pianist of the occasion; his sensitive and authoritative playing matched in every way the level of the singing.” He is serving as Chora Nova’s regular accompanist, as well as assistant organist at First Congregational Church of Palo Alto and pianist/organist at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. In his role as coach and teacher, he has been on several faculties including the Juilliard School, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Mills College, and Holy Names University. He has also served on the coaching staff of the San Francisco Opera, Opera San Jose, and the Aspen Music Festival.
