Trio Barclay's new album presents their most personal work, the result of decades of friendship and numerous collaborations, their work ranging from blockbuster movies and documentaries to mainstream beats with popular artists, and traditional classical instrumental music. The selections being performed feature new compositions by American composers Sheridan Seyfried, John Wineglass and Michael Fine written for this trio.
Trio Barclay – Sean Kennard, piano, Dennis Kim, violin, and Jonah Kim, cello – is an ensemble of big musical personalities who have joined together to create dynamic and exciting musical experiences.
Piano Trio No. 1 by Sheridan Seyfried – This four-movement trio traces a broad emotional arc from darkness to light: beginning with unresolved intensity and yearning, moving through energetic contrasts and rustic vitality, pausing in prayerful melancholy, and ultimately arriving at a joyful, affirmative conclusion. Inspired by the artistry and personalities of Trio Barclay, the work reflects both their individual voices and the spirit of their shared friendship.
Piano Trio No. 2 “Orcas Island” by John Wineglass – Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest, served as the inspiration for this work. In 2023, Wineglass premiered another chamber piece at the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival and the journey sparked the creation of this new work. Originally conceived as a three-movement piano trio, it was later adapted into a single-movement work for solo cello as well.
Piano Trio No. 2 “California” by Michael Fine – Blending reminiscence and imaginative reflections on California’s multicultural character, the trio moves from a festive, Hispanic-inflected opening to two slow movements evoking expansive mountains and sea, before concluding with a lively, pizzicato-driven finale; its recording, brought vividly to life by Trio Barclay’s virtuosity and poetic insight, is presented alongside trios by Sheridan Seyfried and John Christopher Wineglass.
As a grand finalé to the program violist Jessica Chang will join the trio to perform the Mozart Piano Quartet in G minor.
Presented in the candle-lit national landmark Swedenborgian Church, this free concert will be a most intimate musical experience. No advanced reservations. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Seating limited to 100. Donations invited.
